LUCKSUCKER
Lucksuckers feed on good fortune. Part physical entity, part mental
phenomenon, the sucker's appearance is based on the laws of
probability, and may change without warning. While the entity in its
most pure form is but a human-like ghost, its most common appearance
are in the shapes of creatures of objects capable of robbing one of
luck: these include stepladders, black cats, spinning umbrellas, and
giant number 13s (which will be dicussed in greater detail below). Good
luck charms (such as a rabbit's foot, four-leaf clover, horseshoe)
provide only a temporary shield against attack (enduring, on
average, three luck-draining attacks before being consumed), as
well as being the
only effective weapons known to work against these creatures. Hurling
one at a lucksucker may terribly wound it even unto death, but at the
charms dispense. Without several such charms, the best strategy is to
run!
In the stepladder form, the lucksucker will attempt to
defeat its opponent by either stepping or somersaulting him as it
twirls on one leg, pirouetting to avoid reprisal. As a black cat, the
creature will attempt to parch an adventurer of luck by marching back
and forth before him, or placing itself directly in his path. In the
guise of a spinning umbrella, the lucksucker will open as wide as
possible and close repeatedly indoors. The giant number 13 form
steals luck by pointing at itself then the adventurer, staring right in
his face, or waving grimly in order to snatch his attention for as long
as possible.
Lucksuckers had only been discovered in caverns beneath the Mithicus Mountains until the
Great Monster Uprising of the
Second Age of Magic, when they were reported in the following regions:
The Casino in
Port Foozle (despite the nature of this building, they only dwelt here temporarily due to the
gremlin invasion; why they otherwise avoid this territory is unknown),
Fenshire,
Flathead Fjord,
The Gray Mountains Asylum,
Mirror Lake,
Mines of Mendon,
Pheebor,
Forest of Youth,
Miznia Marshlands,
Miznia Jungle,
The Lost Castle of Y'Syska,
Discipline Beach,
Kovalli Desert,
Mithicus Mountains,
The Glass Maze,
Bozbarland,
The Old Lingolf House,
Largoneth Castle,
The Southern Wastes, and the
G.U.E. Tech Training Grounds in the
Ethereal Plane of Atrii.
