FOREST OF THE SPIRITS

The Forest of the Spirits is an underground woods located northeast of Themthar Hills and the subterranean Shanbar, sprawling out for miles between the village and Flood Control Dam #3. These woods have been for many centuries the home of many fantastic creatures (including fairies, mushroom people, and the Tree Spirit) and many not-so-fantastic creatures (wild boars, forest grues, and giant spiders). The verdant forest is overrun with many rare species of flora, including at least one ancient Zorkmid Tree. The undergrowth and brush is so dense in most places that narrow passages, which weave and intertwine like a labyrinth, are the only way for adventurers to explore. Though one is warned to be wary, as many mysterious things happen within the woods.

Often found in antiquity in the Forest of the Spirits, the Hungry Boar Memorial was erected in 1369 GUE by Hans F. Stone in honor of these always hungry beasts.

In the seventeenth century, when the Great Underground Empire had once again been discovered, the Shanbar residents held frequent group sing-alongs under the moon in the Forest of the Spirits.
