POTION

Potions are the most accessible form of magic for the masses, since they are simply drunk like water. No lessons in complicated spellcasting are required. These liquids and powders are of great interest, although their limitations (you can only use them once) have prevented them from supplanting scrolls as the primary method of magical incantation.

Pouring water into a potion vial can destroy its delicate magic properties. Pouring a potion out of the vial other than into one's mouth causes the potion to evaporate before it even reaches the ground. Some potions were required to be shake before use.

Drinking two potions at the same time almost always causes unpleasant reactions for the ingester, including: turning into a spot of moss, an ear turning into a carnivorous toad which devours the brain, the entire body from head to toes turning into gelatin, certain selected parts of the body's anatomny (usually internal) teleporting an indeterminate number of feet in any direction away from the host.

Buyers also realized that they got what they paid for. Some so-called "discount" or "bargain" potions were no bargain at all. A SIRANO potion that wore off midsentence could be disastrous, as the drinker was likely to say the first thing that came to his mind, which was bound to be ridiculous, such as: "Your lips are like rubies, your eyes like alabaster, your hands like...like poached rotgrub."

Discovered several years after 769, when Berzio created the GNUSTO spell, the first of these potions, which obviates the need for food and drink, was named after Berzio himself.
