Note: This guide is for the Windows version of Zork Grand Inquisitor, either on CD or DVD. It assumes your CD/DVD drive is at D:\ and that you wish to install under the C:\Games folder. Adjust instructions accordingly for your situation.

Installing/Configuring Zork Grand Inquisitor (CD Version)

1. Install Zork Grand Inquisitor to C:\Games\ZGI-CD and do the Maximum Install option. (Go here if you're unable to run the installer)
2. Copy the folders D:\zgi and D:\zassets1 on Disc 1 and paste those folders into C:\Games\ZGI-CD\
3. Copy the folder D:\zassets2 from CD 2 and paste that folder into C:\Games\ZGI-CD\
4. Open the file inquis.zix in a text editor (such as Notepad), then replace the instances of the text "CD0: " or "CD1: " with "DIR: .\". View the tables below for the results of these changes.
5. Download the patch and install it.
   >> Note: This patch is only for the CD version, the DVD version has the changes from this patch built in.
6. Run zgiwin.exe to play the game!

2. Create the folder C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\DVD
3. Copy the folders D:\zassetse, D:\zassetsc, D:\zgi_e, D:\engmpegc and D:\eng_mpeg and paste those folders into C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\DVD\
4. Open each of files inquis.zix and inquisc.zix in a text editor (such as Notepad), then replace the instances of the text "CD0: " with "DIR: .\DVD\". View the tables below for the results of these changes.
5. Run zgiwin.exe to play the game!

Unable to run the installer?

Warning: These instructions for getting around the installer may be incorrect. The game will be playable, but many people have reported that there is no Propaganda audo playing over the loudspeakers at the beginning of the game with this method. These instructions will be revised in the future. For more information on the problem, see this Zork Library forum thread.

1. If you have the CD version:
   1. Create the folder C:\Games\ZGI-CD.
   2. Copy all files from the folder D:\zgi\zgi from Disc 1 and paste them into C:\Games\ZGI-CD\
   3. Copy the folder D:\zgi\help from Disc 1 and paste it into C:\Games\ZGI-CD\
   4. Download this zix file, copy it to C:\Games\ZGI-CD and rename the zix file to nemesis.zix.
   5. Continue on with the instructions for the CD version in step 3a above, but skip step 3c.
2. If you have the DVD version:
   1. Create the folder C:\Games\ZGI-DVD
   2. Copy all files from within the folder D:\zgi\zgi_e on the DVD and paste them into C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\
   3. Copy the following folders from the disc and paste them into C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\
      • D:\zgi\help_e
      • D:\zgi\install
   4. Download this zix file, copy it to C:\Games\ZGI-DVD and rename the zix file to inquis.zix.
   5. Download this zix file, copy it to C:\Games\ZGI-DVD and rename the zix file to inquisc.zix.
   6. Continue on with the instructions for the DVD version in step 2 above, but skip step 4.

Other Information

• On modern computers, the panning of the scene with the mouse may move too quickly even on the slower settings. One method to solve this is to use PanRelief by Ken Schafer. You can find more info about this program at The Zork Library. Another method is to use programs as CPU Killer or Game Speed Adjuster. They can be run before playing to slow down the computer temporarily. See their websites for usage information.
• If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, and you don't follow the directions on where to install the game, the game's installer will install to somewhere within C:\Program Files by default. If this happens, you will need to run the game with an administrator account because otherwise the game will not have the permissions to run correctly. Installing elsewhere (such as C:\Games\ZGI-DVD or C:\Games\ZGI-CD as mentioned above), running as Administrator or configuring User Access Control are the three ways to solve this issue.
• For DVD/MPEG2 quality video playback with the DVD version of the game:
  1. Install a DVD/MPEG2 decoder. DVDExpress is recommended. Others may not be detected properly by Zork Grand Inquisitor.
  2. Open the file C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\Inquis.ini using a text editor and change the line "MPEG=0" to "MPEG=1".
  3. Copy the folders D:\zgi\eng_mpeg and D:\zgi\engmpegc from the disc and paste them into C:\Games\ZGI-DVD\DVD\
  4. Reboot your computer.
  5. Run Zork Grand Inquisitor. You should see a new opening video for Dolby Digitial and videos in-game should be of a higher quality. If you see NO videos, then your system isn't detecting either the MPEG2 videos or your decoder correctly. To fix this, try a different DVD/MPEG2 decoder or completely reinstalling the game and decoder.
• If you're having a problem where the game only shows a black screen, this could be caused by your laptop's Optimus graphics. See these instructions by Whaone_Weizz for a workaround of the Optimus bug.
• I received a script to "automatically" install the CD version of ZGI several years ago. I have not tested it myself and many people have had problems with it on Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I include instructions to use it below for completeness. Use at your own risk.
  1. Install Zork Grand Inquisitor to C:\Games\ZGI-CD and do the Maximum Install option. (Go here if you're unable to run the installer)
  2. Download the script zgi.cmd to C:\Games\ZGI-CD\
  3. Go to Start->Run and run cmd.exe.
  4. Change folder to C:\Games\ZGI-CD
  5. Run the script zgi.cmd
  6. If your CD drive is something other than D, use your drive letter as with a parameter, so the command may be 'zgi.cmd F'
  7. This will copy the necessary files and make the changes to your .zix file. You will be prompted to insert your ZGI CDs during the process.
  8. Run the script with the parameter /? for more information on the script.
  9. Download the patch and install it.
     >> Note: This patch is only for the CD version, the DVD version has the changes from this patch built in.
  >> Note: You may get a warning message while installing the patch if you don't have Java installed. This message is incorrect and can be ignored. The message states the following: "Warning! If you are experiencing problems running the patched version of the game, you may need to download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.1.5. Please visit the Activision web site at http://www.activision.com for a link to the JRE download site. Be sure to install the JRE into Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.1 directory."
  10. Run zgiwin.exe to play the game!
• These guides have not been tested on the re-releases of these games from Xplosiv. They may or may not work.
• These guides have not been tested on Windows 8. They may or may not work there.
