I've seen it in countless of games/books. It appeared in Zork Zero. However this is a strange version. Anyways, I have no idea.

If no one answers who hasn't heard it before in the next two days, I will.

I know the answer to that one too. Just to move things along, here is the answer:

Ask the man: If I were to ask someone from the town that you are NOT from which road leads to truth town, what would he tell me?

Then take the other road.

Runs over fields and woods all day
Under the bed at night sits not alone,
With long tongue hanging out,
A-waiting for a bone.
