Zork Nemesis - too speedy!

Need to sharpen your sword? Or perhaps your lantern ran out of fuel? Well come on in, drink some rye and let Jack sharpen your blade and fill that lantern!

Zork Nemesis - too speedy!

Post by MacCentris »

HI, I have the pana rotation to the slowest setting in Zork Nemesis, still its too fast and the arrows keys just wont do in certain situations (like when you're looking in an up-down perspective) my laptop is just way too fast for this, is there a way to slow the rotation even more?  any patches, or modifications I could try?  I have installed the 1.1 patch and the subtitles patch, no luck.

None I am aware of, its fast for me too. a trick that MIGHT work, MIGHT... try turning your mouse in windows to the SLOWEST speed or a bit slower and see if that works.

I ended up using the arrow keys for panning.  But I've gotten stuck now at the bell rope to Malveaux's room.  The frame sequence is too fast to make the jump.  Not sure how to get around this.

I know this is a pain, but one thing you can do is save the game, then restart on another (slower computer) get upstairs, then save again and continue on your fast computer.  Once you're up there, if you use the secret panel to come down, you can always use the secret panel to get back up and don't have to mess with the rope anymore.

If you don't have a slower computer to do the bell action on, you can send it to someone here (me, for instance) to get upstairs and then send you back the save file.

I actually considered this, using an old dinosaur I've got stuffed in the back of the closet.  Instead, ended up using a CPU basher utility I found that works the CPU so hard the game is slowed considerably (at the expensive of heating up the CPU!).  I did this just long enough to jump off that blessed (pun intended) rope, saved the game and then killed that utility.

Look out Malveaux, here I come!

Shoot!  I am stuck at the rope too.  Do you by any chance remember the name of that utility?

I think that, even on a fast computer, you can beat the rope trick.  Just double-click on the rope real fast, without trying to move the cursor between clicks.

No :( not at all, its way too fast.  I am running at 1.5 Ghz.  However I found a utility in download.com called Speed Gear 5.0, will give it a try, its supposed to help slowdown games and certain programs, will let you know how it works for me.  Thanks!

Speed Gear didn't work for me, however I found a great program called
CPU Killer 3 http://www.cpukiller.com/
that did the trick by overpowering the CPU by 90%.

This page helped also:

Yes, the utility I used was CPU Killer.  I also tried the double-click trick to no avail.  Playing Nemesis on a 2.4 GHz has been a bit of an exercise. :)

Shame on the programmers for not writing a timed game loop for these animated sequences.  Then again they probably never anticipated this cult following. ;)

I'll let everyone know how it runs on my 3.2ghz the next time I play through it heh. Sounds like the cult following is still going strong, so shame on them for not thinking their games would be good enough to carry on a legacy.

I used the CPU Grabber last night and I was able to get past the rope. It didn't overheat my PC and it was very easy to stop. The game played beautifully with none of the crashes I experienced before.

I had to turn it way up to 99 percent on my 3.2 ghz to make the rope jump. It was still very fast, but it did work.

Nemesis works just fine on my 3.2ghz but um KB panning is the answer, I will try out CPUkiller too.

There's a really cool little piece of freeware called Turbo that's really good at extracting the caffeine from your CPU! ;v)
