I just checked in Sorcerer myself, and it describes it as a multi-fanged creature who runs off tearing at its glowing fur. So:
The fur glows, but because of the spell, not just...because.
And it doesn't explode.
Hm...

Re: Zork fanart
Nnnice! We should make a little photo album of things in real life that look like they could be from Zork. And are you going to add color to the computer generated one? After seeing these, I might just have to post a little comic I drew up recently starring the Dungeon Master and 69,105 theater seat...

Re: Grue Secrets
Ah...TUU, my first Zork game ever. :D I have a guess to explain the glowing: perhaps they don't normally glow, but the character sees the grue only when it is exposed to the light, right before it spontaneously combusts. The glowing might just have been a precursor to that, the very first effect li...

Re: Grue Secrets
(Concerning grues in Sorcerer) Just what my signature addresses. ;) I have two possible answers for that mystery... Lazy answer: Just like darkness, a second necessary condition for grues is the game having started. Better (slightly): Perhaps they hunt in the pitch darkness by reading humans' brain...

Re: Grue Secrets
Ingenious, and it makes a lot of sense. This reminds me of a quote concerning the mysterious grues that always makes me laugh, which, ironically, comes from someone's negative review of RTZ: "There are several parts of this game where you enter a dark area, like a cave, or maybe you just turned...

Re: Infocom/Zork collections
How about a trophy case or two?It would be nice one day to get some of the original stuff and frame things in glass and inside clear containers in my house, like a mini Zork museum.

Nah; I see some new users since I last visited the forum!
I also love making Zork references on other forums, just to see who gets it.

Oooh. If history is what you need, than I have just the site for you.

Now, I do have a tendency to offer helpful sites to people that they've already seen, but if this one is new to you, don't get too overwhelmed!

Re: DNS - server downtime
Not too shabby...I like the rotating background myself. And I never mentioned it before, but on another note (still relating to the main site, however), the last time I went to a different computer, I was disconcerted by the mouse pointer--it wasn't the ZGI one I've had for months now! Heh...what a ...

That reminds me--I was going to play through it again as well sometime soon. I already miss its Harry Potter meets steampunk aesthetics, though I'll admit I'm not one to identify voice actors.

Never heard of it (naturally), but I looked the game up and it seems pretty neat. Unfortunately, though, this old laptop couldn't handle it...
Have fun.
